United Kingdom — Visa Overview
About the United Kingdom
The United Kingdom is one of the world's most captivating and culturally rich destinations — a nation steeped in history, tradition, and timeless beauty. Comprising four remarkable countries — England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland — the UK offers a travel experience that is truly unparalleled in its depth and diversity.
England enchants visitors with the world-famous skyline of London — home to Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey, and the British Museum. Beyond the capital, the rolling countryside of the Cotswolds, the historic city of Oxford, the ancient stones of Stonehenge, and the vibrant cultural scene of Manchester and Liverpool offer experiences that span centuries of British heritage.
Scotland captivates with its dramatic highland landscapes, ancient castles, mystical lochs — including the legendary Loch Ness — and the historic grandeur of Edinburgh, one of Europe's most beautiful capital cities. Wales stirs the soul with its rugged coastlines, medieval castles, and national parks of breathtaking natural beauty. Northern Ireland draws visitors with the extraordinary Giant's Causeway, the stunning Causeway Coastal Route, and the rich and resilient spirit of Belfast.
Whether you are exploring world-class museums and theatres, walking through centuries of royal history, experiencing the finest cuisine and shopping, or simply immersing yourself in the warmth of British culture — the United Kingdom is a destination that leaves every visitor with memories that last a lifetime. For tourism, business, or family visits, the UK stands as one of the most rewarding journeys a traveller can undertake.
What is a UK Standard Visitor Visa?
A Standard Visitor visa is the official travel authorisation issued by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) that permits eligible foreign nationals to enter the United Kingdom temporarily for tourism, business, family visits, and other permitted visitor activities.
Applicants from countries whose nationals require a visa must obtain a Standard Visitor visa before travelling to the United Kingdom. The visa must be applied for online and secured before departure.
You can usually stay in the UK for up to 6 months per visit, regardless of the validity period of your visa.
What is Permitted — Tourism & Business
Tourism: You may visit the UK for leisure, holidays, and sightseeing; visit family or friends; receive medical treatment where permitted; or undertake certain short recreational courses of up to 30 days.
Business: As a Standard Visitor for business, you can attend meetings, conferences, seminars, and interviews; negotiate and sign contracts; consult with business associates; and carry out other specific activities permitted under the Standard Visitor rules.
What is NOT permitted:
- You cannot work for a UK company or as a self-employed person except for specifically permitted visitor activities.
- You cannot claim public funds.
- You cannot live in the UK for long periods through frequent or successive visits.
- You cannot marry or register a civil partnership on a Standard Visitor visa. A separate Marriage Visitor visa is required.
Visa Validity, Service Type & Processing Time
A UK Standard Visitor visa is available in four validity options — 6 months, 2 years, 5 years, and 10 years. Regardless of the validity selected, no single visit may exceed 6 months. The validity and number of entries are determined by UKVI based on the applicant's circumstances, travel history, and purpose of visit.

UK eVisa — Replacing the Vignette Sticker
Background & The Transition
- The UK has been transitioning from physical visa documents and vignette stickers to a digital immigration system.
- UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) developed eVisas to provide a secure digital record of an individual's identity and immigration status.
- The transition has been implemented in phases, with visitor visa applicants increasingly receiving digital immigration status rather than a physical vignette.
What is a UK eVisa?
A UK eVisa is a secure digital record of your identity and immigration permission. It is linked to your UKVI account and passport, allowing your immigration status to be checked digitally.
Before travelling to the UK, applicants should access their UKVI account and confirm that their eVisa is active and correctly linked to the passport they intend to use for travel.
How the UK eVisa Process Works
Step 1 — Begin Your Application
Complete the UK Standard Visitor visa application online through the official UK government website. The application must be completed accurately before proceeding to the biometric stage.
Step 2 — Schedule Your Appointment
Book your biometric appointment at the designated Visa Application Centre. Depending on the application route and location, you may be required to attend in person.
Step 3 — Visit the Visa Application Centre
Attend your appointment on the confirmed date and provide your fingerprints and digital photograph. Follow the document submission instructions provided during the application process.
Step 4 — Await Your Decision & Access Your eVisa
Once UKVI makes a decision, you will receive notification with instructions regarding your immigration status. Sign in to your UKVI account, check that your eVisa is active, and ensure it is correctly linked to the passport you will use for travel.
Key Benefits of the UK eVisa System
- Secure: Digital immigration records reduce the risk of physical documents being lost, stolen, or damaged.
- Digital access: Your immigration status can be accessed through your UKVI account.
- Convenient: There is less dependence on physical visa documentation and courier services.
- Digital verification: Your immigration status can be checked electronically by relevant authorities and organisations.
- Passport-linked: Your eVisa should be correctly linked to the passport you intend to use when travelling.
Important Note
Any physical vignette issued before the transition to eVisas may remain valid according to the permission granted. Applicants should sign in to their UKVI account before travelling to confirm that their immigration status and passport details are correct.
Visa requirements, processing times, service availability, immigration procedures, and eVisa policies may change. Applicants should always verify the latest requirements and guidance through the official UK government website before submitting an application or travelling.
