Overview

About the Schengen Area

The Schengen Area is one of the world's greatest achievements in international cooperation — a unified travel zone spanning 29 countries across Europe where internal border controls have been abolished, allowing seamless freedom of movement across an entire continent on the strength of a single visa. Named after the small Luxembourg village of Schengen where the founding agreement was signed in 1985, what began as a bold experiment between five neighbouring nations has grown into one of the most transformative frameworks in modern history — reshaping how people travel, trade, and connect across Europe.

Today the Schengen Area covers an extraordinary sweep of the European continent — from the sun-soaked coastlines of the Mediterranean to the snow-capped peaks of the Alps, from the ancient fjords of Scandinavia to the medieval town squares of Central Europe, from the wild Atlantic coastlines of the Iberian Peninsula to the grand imperial capitals of the east. A single Schengen visa is the key to all of this — granting the holder seamless access across 29 countries, dozens of World Heritage Sites, thousands of years of history, and some of the world's most celebrated art, architecture, cuisine, and culture — without the need for a separate visa for each country visited.

What the Formation of the Schengen Area Means for Travellers

The abolition of internal border controls across the Schengen zone has created a set of practical and transformative benefits that make European travel uniquely accessible and flexible for visitors from around the world:

  • One Visa — 29 Countries: A single Schengen visa grants access to all 29 member nations — eliminating the time, cost, and complexity of applying for separate visas for each country on the itinerary.
  • No Internal Border Checks: Once inside the Schengen Area, travellers move freely between member countries without passport checks, customs stops, or immigration queues at internal borders — making multi-country European itineraries seamless and effortless.
  • Flexible Multi-Country Itineraries: Travellers can design their own itinerary across multiple countries — crossing borders by road, rail, or air — with complete freedom of movement throughout the zone for the duration of their permitted stay.
  • 90 Days of Exploration: A standard Schengen short-stay visa permits up to 90 days within any 180-day rolling period — across the entire zone combined — offering generous time to explore multiple destinations in a single trip.
  • Single Application Process: Rather than navigating 29 different visa systems, processes, and embassies, travellers submit one application to a single Embassy — making the process significantly more straightforward and time-efficient.
  • Unified Travel Insurance: A single Schengen-compliant travel insurance policy covers the traveller across the entire zone — no need for separate insurance for each country visited.
  • Economic and Cultural Access: The Schengen framework facilitates not only tourism but also business travel, academic exchange, cultural participation, and family visits — making Europe one of the most accessible and open regions in the world for international visitors.

The Schengen Area comprises 25 European Union member states — Austria · Belgium · Bulgaria · Croatia · Czech Republic · Denmark · Estonia · Finland · France · Germany · Greece · Hungary · Italy · Latvia · Lithuania · Luxembourg · Malta · Netherlands · Poland · Portugal · Romania · Slovakia · Slovenia · Spain · Sweden — alongside 4 non-EU European nations — Iceland · Norway · Switzerland · Liechtenstein — who participate through separate bilateral agreements with the European Union. Together they form a zone of extraordinary cultural, historical, and geographical diversity — united by the principle of open borders and the freedom to move freely.

A single Schengen visa is one of the most powerful and versatile travel documents in the world — and the gateway to a continent that has shaped the history, art, music, architecture, and culture of civilisation itself.

What is a Schengen Visa?

A Schengen visa is an official travel authorisation that permits its holder to enter, travel freely across, and stay within the Schengen Area — a unified travel zone comprising 29 countries across Europe where internal border controls have been abolished. A single visa grants seamless access to all member nations without the need for separate country-specific visas.

Under the standard short-stay rule, a Schengen visa allows a stay of up to 90 days within any 180-day rolling period, across the entire zone combined — not per country individually.

The Schengen Area was established under the 1985 Schengen Agreement — initially signed by France, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands — and has grown into one of the world's most ambitious and successful international cooperation frameworks. Today it comprises 25 EU member states alongside 4 non-EU nations — Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein — who participate through bilateral agreements.

Visa Validity, Entries & Permitted Stay

Your Schengen visa validity, number of entries, and permitted stay are all determined individually by the issuing Embassy — none of these are fixed. Validity can range from a few days to up to 2 or 5 years depending on your travel history and profile, while entries may be granted as single, double, or multiple. Importantly, a longer validity does not guarantee a longer stay — two travellers with visas expiring on the exact same date may be permitted to stay for different durations. Everything is assessed case by case, and all conditions stamped on your visa must be strictly respected.

Visa Entry Types

  • Single Entry: One entry into the Schengen Area — once you exit, the visa is no longer valid.
  • Double Entry: Two entries into the Schengen Area within the visa validity period.
  • Multiple Entry: Unlimited entries within the visa validity period — subject always to the 90-day/180-day rule.

Type A — Airport Transit Visa: For travellers transiting through a Schengen airport without entering the Schengen Area — required for certain nationalities. Does not permit entry into the Schengen zone.

Type D — National Long-Stay Visa: For stays exceeding 90 days — covers study, work, family reunification, and other long-term purposes. Requires a separate application process through the Embassy of the specific destination country.

Purpose of Travel

Schengen short-stay visas are issued for the following purposes:

  • Tourism, sightseeing, leisure travel, and recreational activities
  • Business meetings, conferences, trade fairs, and professional activities
  • Family visits and personal travel
  • Cultural, academic, and sporting events and activities
  • Medical treatment
  • Transit through the Schengen Area

Not Permitted on a Schengen Short-Stay Visa

  • Paid employment or engaging in work — requires a separate national work visa
  • Long-term study — requires a Type D national visa
  • Permanent relocation or settlement
  • Any activity inconsistent with the declared purpose of visit

The 90/180-Day Rule — Important

The 90-day permitted stay applies across the entire Schengen Area combined — not per country. Travellers must carefully count their days across all Schengen member states within any rolling 180-day period. Exceeding 90 days in the Schengen zone — even by one day — is a serious immigration violation and may result in fines, deportation, and a future entry ban.

Do You Need a Schengen Visa? — UAE, India & KSA

UAE Nationals — Visa Free: UAE nationals holding an Emirati passport are fully visa-exempt for the Schengen Area — they may enter and stay for up to 90 days within any 180-day period without any visa or application. Entry on valid UAE passport.

Important — ETIAS for UAE Nationals: UAE nationals will be required to register through the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS) — a pre-travel electronic authorisation — before entering the Schengen Area. ETIAS registration is distinct from a Schengen visa and is a straightforward online process. It is not yet fully operational — Luxury tours will advise UAE nationals on the ETIAS requirement as soon as it is activated.

UAE Residents of Other Nationalities: Visa eligibility is determined by the passport held — not UAE residency status. Residents of the UAE holding passports of non-exempt nationalities — including Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Filipino, Egyptian, Sri Lankan, and others — require a full Schengen visa. The Schengen visa must be applied for through the Embassy or authorised Visa Application Centre (VFS Global, BLS International, or TLScontact) of the specific Schengen country the applicant intends to visit first or where they will spend the majority of their time.

KSA Nationals: Saudi Arabian nationals require a Schengen visa. KSA nationals apply through the Embassy or authorised Visa Application Centre of the specific Schengen destination country — in Riyadh, Jeddah, or other authorised cities in the Kingdom.

KSA Residents of Other Nationalities: Visa eligibility is determined by the passport held. KSA residents apply through the Embassy or authorised Visa Application Centre of the specific Schengen country — based on city of residence in the Kingdom.

Indian Nationals: Indian nationals require a full Schengen visa — applied for through the Embassy or authorised VFS Global centre of the specific Schengen country in India. The Embassy of the country the applicant intends to visit first or spend the most time in is the correct authority to apply through.

Which Embassy Do I Apply Through?

The Schengen visa must be submitted to the Embassy or authorised Visa Application Centre of the Schengen country where:

  • The applicant intends to spend the majority of their trip — if visiting multiple countries; or
  • The applicant will enter the Schengen Area first — if time spent in each country is roughly equal.

If travelling to a single Schengen country — apply through that country's Embassy directly. Luxury tours will advise on the correct Embassy for your specific itinerary.

Important Entry Requirements

  • Passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended date of departure from the Schengen Area — issued within the last 10 years — minimum 2 blank pages. Most consulates strongly recommend 6 months validity beyond departure date.
  • Schengen travel insurance mandatory — minimum EUR 30,000 medical coverage — valid for the entire Schengen Area for the full duration of stay — including emergency medical treatment, hospitalisation, and repatriation.
  • UAE Residence Visa must be valid — minimum 3 months beyond the return date — for UAE-based applicants.
  • All conditions stamped on the visa must be strictly adhered to — validity period, permitted entries, and permitted stay.

Processing Time

  • Standard processing: 15 to 21 working days from date of submission — subject to Embassy workload and country-specific timelines.
  • Priority and express service available through select Embassies and VFS/BLS/TLS centres — at additional charge.
  • Apply at least 6 weeks before the intended travel date — peak summer and Christmas seasons may require significantly earlier applications.
  • Applications may be submitted up to 6 months before the intended travel date.

General Disclaimer

All visa decisions rest solely with the Embassy or Consulate of the relevant Schengen member state. Luxury tours acts as a professional visa assistance provider only. Possession of an approved Schengen visa does not guarantee entry — final entry is at the sole discretion of immigration officials at the Schengen port of entry.

Visa Terms & Conditions

1. Scope of Service

Luxury tours operates solely as a professional visa assistance provider. Our role is to guide applicants through the Schengen visa process — including document compilation, application assistance, and biometric appointment scheduling at the respective embassy or Visa Application Centre (VAC). We do not represent, act on behalf of, or have any affiliation with any Schengen embassy or consulate.

2. Visa Decision & Discretionary Authority

All decisions relating to visa approval or rejection, number of entries, permitted stay duration, additional documentation requests, interview requirements, and biometric obligations rest solely and entirely with the issuing embassy or consulate. Luxury tours has no influence over, and accepts no liability for, the outcome of any visa application. During the examination of an application, the consulate reserves the right to request additional supporting documents beyond the standard checklist and may call the applicant for a personal interview at its sole discretion.

3. First Point of Entry

Your first point of entry into the Schengen Area must be the country that issued your visa. Entering through a different country may result in questioning at the border, and entry is not guaranteed — this decision rests entirely with the Border Control Officer at the port of entry. Adhering to this rule not only ensures a smooth immigration experience but also positively supports future visa applications.

4. Majority of Stay in the Issuing Country

The primary purpose of your visit must align with the details submitted in your visa application. As a general guideline, applicants should spend the majority of their time — at least 50% of the approved stay — in the country that issued the visa. Deviating significantly from the declared itinerary may raise concerns during future applications or at the point of entry.

5. Biometric Appointments

Where required, our team will make every effort to secure the earliest available biometric appointment at the designated embassy or VAC. However, the release, availability, scheduling, rescheduling, postponement, or cancellation of appointment slots is managed exclusively by the respective embassy or VAC and is entirely beyond our control. Any such changes will be communicated to applicants promptly, with all possible assistance provided to navigate the updated process.

A minimum gap of 15 days between the biometric appointment date and the intended travel date is mandatory. Applicants are required to attend their appointment on the confirmed date and time. Failure to appear may result in delays, forfeiture of the slot, and the requirement to rebook — subject to availability and applicable fees.

Please note: The completion of a biometric appointment does not constitute, imply, or guarantee visa approval or the right to enter any Schengen member country.

6. Overstaying Your Visa

Overstaying a Schengen visa — whether intentional or not — is recorded by immigration authorities across all member states. Consequences may include financial penalties, immediate deportation, or a ban from re-entering the Schengen Area. Applicants are strongly advised to plan their travel strictly within the dates and duration approved on their visa.

7. Non-Refundable Fees & Booking Integrity

All fees paid in connection with the visa application — including embassy visa fees, biometric charges, VAC service fees, and Luxury tours service charges — are strictly non-refundable once the application process has been initiated, regardless of the outcome of the application or the applicant's ability to travel.

Luxury tours strongly advises against the use of dummy or provisional hotel and flight bookings when submitting a Schengen visa application. Applicants must submit genuine, confirmed bookings. The use of fabricated travel documents may result in immediate visa refusal and can adversely impact future applications.

8. Understanding Schengen Visa Refusal Letters

Schengen visa refusal letters are intentionally drafted in broad, standardised language. This is consistent across all 29 member states and is by design, for the following reasons:

Standardisation — With 29 member countries each operating their own consular systems, refusal letters follow a uniform format to ensure consistency across the Schengen Area and to align with the shared legal framework governing visa decisions.

Legal Protection — Refusal letters are intentionally drafted in broad, standardised language in accordance with established visa regulations and the legal framework governing consular decisions. The specific reasoning behind a refusal is considered a matter of consular discretion and, where applicable, may be subject to confidentiality in the interest of regulatory compliance and administrative integrity.

Multiple Grounds — A refusal may be based on several concurrent factors. Rather than listing every individual concern, the letter references the relevant legal ground, keeping the communication clear and administratively manageable.

Processing Efficiency — Consulates process thousands of applications annually. Standardised refusal letters allow visa officers to manage high volumes efficiently, particularly in complex or borderline cases.

9. Force Majeure & Circumstances Beyond Our Control

Luxury tours shall not be held liable for delays, disruptions, or changes arising from circumstances beyond our control, including embassy closures, system outages, policy changes by issuing authorities, or any force majeure event. Our team will at all times endeavour to provide timely guidance and support under such circumstances.
